Privacy Policy

Summary

There are no user accounts, ads or analytics on Earthquake.Global, and we never sell or share personal data. The Near Me feature works entirely on your device. Should we ever introduce analytics or advertising, this policy will change first and, where the law requires it, you will be asked to consent before anything loads.

Server Logs and Security

Every request to our servers carries technical details: your IP address, the address requested, a timestamp and your browser's user agent. We rely on them to serve pages, protect the service and fix faults, which is our legitimate interest in operating the site. They are kept only as long as those purposes require and are never used to build visitor profiles.

The rate limit that protects the live maps tallies requests from each network over one-minute windows. The tallies live in memory, are discarded after the minute and are never saved.

Cookies and Local Storage

The only cookie we use is theme, and it is set only if you change between the light and dark look, so your pick sticks. Your browser's local storage holds the same setting. Nothing else is stored.

Your Location (Near Me)

Tapping Near Me makes your browser ask whether to share your location, and nothing happens without your permission. Distances are worked out in your browser. Your position is never transmitted to us or saved, and it is gone when you reload or close the page.

Third-Party Services

CARTO map tiles. Opening the optional street map makes your browser fetch tiles straight from CARTO, which therefore sees your IP address and browser information. Our standard map is generated on our own server and involves no outside service.

Email

Messages you send us are used for one purpose: answering you. We do not subscribe you to anything or pass your message on.

Your Rights

Privacy laws such as the EU's GDPR or US state laws may give you the right to see, correct or erase personal data about you, to object to how it is used and to complain to a data protection authority. In practice, the only personal data we might hold is an email exchange. Contact info [at] earthquake.global and you will get an answer within one month.

Children

Earthquake.Global is meant for a general audience, and we do not knowingly gather personal data from children.
