Using This Site
These terms set the rules for using Earthquake.Global. Using the site means you accept them; if you do not, please stop using it.
Information Only, Not a Warning System
Earthquake.Global reports earthquakes after they occur, for learning and general awareness. It is not an official source of earthquake alerts, tsunami warnings, hazard assessments or emergency services, so do not base safety decisions on it. In an emergency, do what your civil protection agency and local authorities tell you.
Our safety and preparedness advice condenses publicly available guidance and does not replace official instructions. Anything we say about insurance, construction or risk is general information, not professional insurance, legal, engineering or financial advice; for your own situation, consult a qualified expert.
Earthquake Data
Earthquake information comes from the USGS catalog. It can arrive late, be incomplete or be updated, and recent events (automatic solutions in particular) may get a new magnitude, position or depth after review, or differ from figures released by national agencies. The agency that located an earthquake keeps the official record.
Acceptable Use
Feel free to browse the site, link to it and quote it for personal, educational or journalistic use. Please do not:
- Treat the site's internal data endpoints as an API, or call them from other sites, apps or scripts. They only exist to keep our own maps current.
- Copy the site wholesale, get around rate limits or access controls, or generate automated traffic that slows the site for everyone else.
- Pass off our pages, maps or writing as your own, or show the site inside a frame on another website.
For earthquake data in your own work, go straight to the public USGS catalog.
Attribution
When you use our maps, figures or writing in research, journalism or other public work, credit Earthquake.Global and name the USGS as the data source. Street map tiles belong to CARTO and the OpenStreetMap contributors and follow their own terms.
No Warranty
We provide the site "as is" and "as available," with no warranty of any kind, whether express or implied, covering accuracy, completeness, uptime or suitability for a specific purpose. We may change or withdraw features and data whenever needed.
Limitation of Liability
As far as the law allows, Earthquake.Global and the people who run it accept no liability for losses or damage resulting from using the site or relying on what it shows, including decisions made because of earthquake information published here. Consumer rights that the law does not allow to be waived are not affected.
Changes to These Terms
These terms may change. The "Last reviewed" date at the top marks the current version, and using the site after a change means you accept it. Our privacy policy explains how we handle data.
